Willie Coetzee's Biography

Willie Coetzee, Set Design and Art DirectorWillie Coetzee's mission is to be the Art Director committed to making your vision a reality using computer aided design from conception to the final product in 3D.

He matriculated at Hoërskool Ben Viljoen – Groblersdal where he received honorary colours for culture and a distinction in graphic drawings and woodwork.

After graduating with a BA (ed) and BA (hon) in Theory and principles of Drama from the University of Pretoria in 1982 he started as a teacher at secondary level. Directing and designing plays included 'The Human Voice' and 'The Indian wants the Bronx' for which he received a silver medal in the Administrators Cup Competition

Subsequently Brigadier films employed him as an Art Director working on mainly Features and Television Series. Part of his portfolio was Styling, Costumes, Make-Up and Hair as well as Location Dressing (Period and Futuristic).

He then joined Jenkset Studios as a set designer and set builder for TV commercials, Feature Films, Launches and Show stands. As a result of the reputation he gained during these formative years he was asked by various leading production houses to art direct for them on a continual basis. These production companies include: L&O Leisure Co. Brigadiers, Heyns Films, Nasrec, Constantia Films, Cinematique, Trillion Video and Karat Films

During these formative years he started establishing himself on the international stage, starting off as a Set builder working himself through the ranks to become a Props master and ending up as an Art Director and Set Designer working on productions such as American Ninja II, American Ninja III, African Express and Laser Mission. All of these proved to be very successful commercially.

In 1992 he went into partnership with Setbuild cc. his prime function was Set Design as well as managerial. During this time they established themselves as the leading set construction and designing studio in Gauteng. Companies who regularly availed themselves of their services include Mario Bozzone Film Productions, Local Heroes, James Garrets and Partners, Velocity Africa, Rapid Blue, The Gate House, Miros Productions, Ornico, Peter Gird Productions, Paul Thompson Productions, Rolling Pictures, Salamander et al.

In 2003 he joined Franz Marx Films to Art Direct the MNET television serial ‘Egoli – Place of Gold’

Managing a crew of 25 his responsibilities included designing all sets, overseeing the construction and set dressing as well as directing the props, wardrobe, make up and hair. In 2009 the series was cancelled by MNET.

He subsequently Art Directed ‘Egoli the Movie’, 'Die ongelooflike avonture van Hanna Hoekom' 'Susanna van Biljon se storie' and 'Phindile's Heart'

He was construction manager for Endemol South Africa on 'The Guinness Football Challenge' for CRTV and TV 3 in respectively Cameroon (in French) and Ghana (in ft & inches) where he also had to train the local art departments up to an international standby level to cope with a 7 camera set up live broadcast competition show.

His latest endeavours include production managing and art directing a KykNET featurefilm 'Lien se Lankstaan Skoene' and designing 6 new studio sets for 'Villa Rosa' a KykNET television serial which should be on air early 2013.
